| One option that separates Kennco's superbedder from all
others is that our frame and superstructure are strong enough to add a dry
fertilizer hopper. This allows the grower to apply fertilizer or other nutrients
to the planting bed at the time it is formed. Our 600 lb (273 kg) and 1,300
lb (591 kg) hoppers fit on 1 bed superbedders. For multiple bed superbedders,
we make hoppers that hold about 2000 lb (909 kg) of fertilizer per bed. For
example, a 6000 lb (2727 kg) hopper fits a 3 bed superbedder.
Fertilizer is delivered to the exit door by a stainless steel feed chain. A 6 in wide chain is used on our 600 lb (273 kg) hopper. 12 in chain is used on larger models. The fertilizer application rate is controlled by the feed chain speed and exit door opening height. A flow control valve on the hydraulic motor controls the chain speed. The exit door opening height is adjustable by a simple screw mechanism. After going through the exit door, fertilizer falls into a stainless steel catch hopper for distribution on the bed. Catch hoppers are custom built for the application method desired. Fertilizer can be banded through 1, 2, or 3 tubes for exact placement in the bed. The tubes are adjustable from side to side to any position on the bed. They lay a line of fertilizer about 2-3 in (5-7.5 cm) wide. In most cases, banding tubes are used with "shoes" that are welded into the superbedder press pan. Each shoe makes a trench about 2 in (5 cm) deep and 3 in (7.5 cm) wide. When adjusted properly, the banding tube drops the fertilizer directly into this small trench in the top of the bed. We also make a bandcast catch hopper and distributor which spreads the fertilizer across the top of the bed evenly instead of in a line. When ordering a fertilizer hopper with a superbedder, it is important to specify whether to feed fertilizer into the throat of the press pan, which mixes the fertilizer with the soil, or behind the press pan onto the formed bed. Placing the fertilizer into the soil as it is rolled and mixed gives the benefit of mixing, but reduces control over placement. Most of our customers prefer precise placement. Our fertilizer hoppers are constructed of stainless steel or 16 gauge hot-rolled steel that is cold-galvanized before painting. |

| When ordering the bandcast catch hopper and distributor, the customer must specify the exact width that they want to apply the fertilizer to the bed top. It is the customers responsibility to ensure that they have enough tractor horsepower to lift and pull a superbedder with various sized fertilizer hoppers through the field. Kenncos sales department can only advise on horsepower requirements and can provide equipment weights and dimensions. Fertilizer capacity is approximate. | ||
